London, UK – 28 November, 2023 – Allstar, one of the UK’s leading electric vehicle (EV), fuel and business expense payment companies, today announced it has partnered with Applegreen Electric, a leading EV charging network. This collaboration is set to boost the convenience and amenities available to motorway drivers on Allstar's expanding EV charging network across the UK’s motorway network.
With the initial addition of 86 ultra-rapid charge points across 14 motorway sites and building to over 500 charge points across the Welcome Break and Applegreen UK networks over the next year, the partnership increases the number of charge points accessible through the Allstar network. The total now exceeds 14,000 charge points located at over 4,000 sites across the UK, with 91% of these chargers being fast, rapid and ultra-rapid. The move increases convenience for EV fleet drivers – with Allstar covering 85% of UK motorway service areas – allowing them to get back on the road faster and for longer.
Notably, the new Applegreen Electric charge points will be available to Allstar customers at Welcome Break and Applegreen services across major strategic road network arteries in the UK, from London to Glasgow, Cardiff to Sheffield and beyond. These charging sites will offer 24/7 driver support, providing peace of mind and assistance to EV drivers. Welcome Break is one of the UK’s leading motorway service operators, running 59 service areas and 31 hotels up and down the country, as well as 24-hour fuel courts and EV charging services.
As of September 2023, there were approximately 920,000 fully electric cars on UK roads, according to Allstar’s partner Zapmap, with an additional 560,000 plug-in hybrids. Although the numbers are rising rapidly, there are still many UK businesses that either haven’t started electrification or are still in the early stages of adoption, thus managing mixed fossil fuel and electric-powered fleets. Meanwhile, charging infrastructure remains one of the key challenges for fleets of all sizes.
To answer this need, Allstar recently unveiled Allstar Chargepass, a solution aimed at accelerating the UK’s transition to electric vehicles by simplifying payment for EV charging, both at home and on the road. It’s the only solution in the UK that allows customers to charge at home and on-the-road, capturing the charging sessions, which are conveniently located alongside fuel transactions in a single, easy-to-manage paperless HMRC-compliant invoice. As this also applies to businesses operating mixed fleets (electric and fuel), this gives them ultimate flexibility across their total fuel and charging expenses.
By partnering with Applegreen Electric, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Applegreen Group, Allstar is aligning with like-minded and innovative companies that share its mission to simplify the charging experience for drivers. Applegreen is a major petrol forecourt retailer that, like Allstar, has embraced the EV future with Applegreen Electric to work in tandem with fuel for the best of both services. Applegreen Electric focuses exclusively on developing electric vehicle charging infrastructure and delivers over one million fast charging sessions to its customers each year, in a rapidly growing transition to more sustainable transport fuels, with a range of partners and customers across the US, the UK and Ireland.
Ashley Tate, MD, Allstar Chargepass UK, commented: "Our commitment at Allstar is to provide market-leading payment solutions for UK businesses with fleets. By partnering with Applegreen Electric, we’re bringing more convenience to our customers that use the motorway network, allowing them to recharge and have access to amenities offered by popular brands at the Welcome Break Services.”
He added: “It forms a major milestone in our mission to make EV charging more accessible and affordable for businesses of all sizes in the UK. With over 14,000 charge points now available on the Allstar network and with 91% of charge points providing fast, rapid and ultra-rapid charging, we're helping our customers to reduce range anxiety. This is a significant step forward in our journey to a more sustainable future for transportation."
Jack O’Brien, Country Manager UK at Applegreen Electric, added: "Allstar values align perfectly with our own in providing access to world-class rapid EV charging to drivers. Allstar’s intuitive payments options will be a valuable asset to our business customers. Our partnership will help to remove one of the key barriers to EV adoption for businesses of all sizes by making it easier for drivers to find and use reliable charging points, supporting the switch to electric and empowering EV drivers to enjoy their journey.”
Allstar’s EV network growth has been achieved through 17 partnerships to date with leading EV charge point networks on the market, including GRIDSERVE and InstaVolt.
